Visit Caye Caulker – a small, inhabited island formation off the coast of Belize. To get there, you can take a boat from Belize City or from Chetumal in Mexico.
There’s a seriously strong Caribbean influence in this place and it makes for an interesting contrast with mainland Central America. There are some active adventures to enjoy in the surrounding water, including sailing, snorkelling and scuba diving one of the best dive sites in Central America, but you mustn’t forget to take the time to just slow down your pace, rest your sandy feet in a hammock and enjoy an island cocktail.
This tiny patch of sandy bliss is the kind of place that you struggle to leave behind and, to give you an idea of why, here are 15 reasons to visit Caye Caulker.
LOL at “marvel at what passes for swimwear’ hahaha!
Oh just swimming with sharks and sting rays alone is enough to make me want to head there! If only I can be closer to that part of the world!!!

I had a choice of shots with that one. There was another guy who liked tight speedos and would stand with his arms behind his head getting the optimal tan and showing off his buff 50-year-old bod! Kudos to them both!
Another option is to participate in “Trivia Night” at Barrier Reef Sports Bar and Grill! Such fun times there. Man, this post takes me back to my time at Caye Caulker years ago: http://bit.ly/1S9IrER. Thanks for giving me flash backs of my favourite place in the world!

Oh what!?! I missed out on a trivia night? I LOVE trivia nights! Caye Caulker really is an awesome place, isn’t it?!
Hey there, went to Ambergris in November and had an unbelievably amazing trip. Looking at doing a summer trip to Caye Caulker, 4 adults, my spouse, and my two young adult children of 20 and 18. All divers.
Where do you stay on Caulker? Do you fly into Belize City?
Any recommendations on other dives beside the Blue Hole?
Hi Christine,
I stayed in a hostel on Caye Caulker, which I don’t think would be appropriate for a family group. However, there were plenty of guest houses on the island as well. I’d suggest looking on Booking.com or maybe HostelWorld, but focussing on guesthouses and small hotels. I was on a big trip from Mexico to Guatemala, so I entered Belize by bus from Mexico and then took a ferry over to Caye Caulker. I assume flying into Belize City would be the best option, but I guess you could compare prices with flights to Mexico and tag on a couple of places in the Yucatan Peninsula.
I only dived the Blue Hole, plus two other sites that were included in the trip so I can’t really recommend anything, but I’m sure there are plenty of great sites in that area. The reef is beautiful.
I hope you have an amazing trip. Don’t miss the manatees either!
