The Bangkok Cat Cafe Experience

August 21, 2015 by Arianwen Morris 5 Comments

Every big city needs a place to unwind. In Bangkok, there can’t be a better place than Caturday Cat Cafe. In fact, it’s one of my top 10 Bangkok top 10 list!

CATURDAY CAT CAFE

Tucked down a side street that leads off Phayathai Road near Siam Square, it can be tricky to find, but if you turn off beside the less inviting establishment ‘Guts’ you’ll encounter a secret hideaway popular with the locals, but not yet on the usual backpacker itinerary.

A WARM WELCOME

A double door system acts as a barrier to prevent the loss of felines to the neighbourhood. They ask you to remove your shoes as you enter and to store them in this area. Once inside you’re shown to a seat or mat on the floor and given a moment to pore over the moggie-inspired menu. Treats range from cakes to cheesy chips and from fruit smoothies to coffee. It’s a bit more expensive than the average cafe, but the entertainment more than makes up for it.

CATS EVERYWHERE!

Cats can be found under your chair, on your dining table and on an intricate system of ledges and scratch poles that decorates the centre of the room.

EVEN ON THE DECOR

They feature on the window panes, cushions, cups and plates, the waitresses’ aprons, the wallpaper and in large Roman era-inspired paintings.

POSERS

A lot of the cats are asleep, but the more inquisitive ones provide hours of entertainment pulling ridiculous expressions and sitting in ungainly positions while grooming themselves.

FELINE INTERACTION

A cute cartoon notice asks you not to feed them, pick them up or disturb them when they’re asleep, but buckets of toys are provided so you can play games with the ones that are awake.

SELFIE TIME

Even if you’re not a ‘cat person’, this place is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Just keep an eye on your order because you won’t get a refund if a moggie licks your muffin.

HOW TO FIND IT

Caturday Cafe is on Facebook and Instagram. The address is 10400, 115 Phayathai Road, Thanon Phetchaburi, Ratchathewi, Bangkok 10400. Walking there from Khao San Road takes about one hour. From the enormous shopping mall at Siam Square, it’s just five minutes.

I hope you like it as much as the other one! I’m so pleased I heard it existed because I would never have gone there otherwise. Even knowing exactly where it’s located I almost missed it! Let me know what you think!
