The gear you’ll want to pack for your next adventure is probably going to depend a lot on where you’re heading. Going to Costa Rica? Shorts are probably mandatory. Venturing north to Nova Scotia? A solid jacket is definitely key.
Some items, however, are essential no matter where you’re traveling. Check out my recommendations of the most important items for travellers, no matter the weather.
1. GOOD WALKING SHOES
If you’re travelling, chances are, you’ll be walking a lot. Most countries in the world are much more walkable than your typical American suburbia. If you want to be comfortable while walking around, check out the best walking shoes for men so that your feet don’t get sore on those long, all-day excursions.
2. HIGH-QUALITY WINDBREAKER
Even if you’re heading somewhere reasonably warm, and especially if you’re venturing out into the cold, a solid windbreaker can make a world of difference. Have you ever noticed that wind chill can bring the temperature outside down an extra 5 degrees or so? Cutting that chill can be the difference between shivering in wind and adventuring comfortably forward! Light, packable options are best, so they don’t take up too much room in your suitcase. Plus, if you’re out all day, they can fit right into your day pack.
3. A TRUSTY DAYPACK
If you’re out all day seeing the sites, hiking through the woods on an outdoor expedition, or just keeping some snacks and a sweater handy while you’re on the go, you should definitely consider a reliable daypack. A small-sized, packable backpack is best. While the allure of a stylish purse or messenger bag is certainly tempting, backpacks are much more comfortable and packable for long days and plenty of gear.
4. A BRIGHTLY COLOURED CAP
Hats are useful for a variety of reasons. A good ball cap can keep the sun off your face if you’re trekking outdoors, and keep the warmth in on those chilly evenings. Plus, if your cap is brightly coloured, the folks you’re travelling with will be able to spot you easily in those confusing crowds. It may seem silly at first, but trust us, you’ll be glad to easily find each other.
5. A GREAT CAMERA
You can probably get away with your phone camera, especially with most newer models, but if you really want your photos to impress, consider picking up a higher-quality digital camera before your trip. Working with lenses may seem intimidating, but with some practice and research, your travel photos will look professional grade and gorgeous.
6. A TRAVEL MOBILE PLAN
Some phone carriers offer mobile packages for their customers who are travelling abroad. We recommend that you look into getting a decent data package, as well as calls and texts, for your next trip. This is especially important if you’re travelling with other people. The last thing you want is to spend the better part of an afternoon searching for your friend in a crowd, hopelessly calling their name and cursing your out-of-service phone. Avoid the stress and get a plan so you can just call each other if someone is lost.
7. TRAVEL INSURANCE
Travel is fun, rewarding and exciting. However, sometimes things do go wrong. Protect yourself from mishaps such as lost baggage, pickpocketing and health crises by investing in a solid travel insurance plan. They are not as expensive as you might think, and even if they end up being for no other reason than your peace of mind, they’re definitiely worth it!
8. EASILY SPOTTED LUGGAGE
Have you ever looked at a baggage claim carousel and thought, “Wow. That’s a lot of black or grey box-shaped suitcases?”. If you plan on checking in bags during your trip, pick out bags that are brightly coloured or patterned, or even a unique design and shape, so that you can easily identify your bags. Plus, on the off-chance that your bags are misplaced by the airline, they will be easier to locate!
Travel is an excellent way to spend your time, a great way to learn more about the world and yourself, and a surefire way to grow closer to the folks you travel with. Be sure that you pack the right gear so that you’re ready for whatever your adventure brings you!
Nice List. Some sort of water purifier – filter or tabs – is always good to bring along while traveling too.
