January 19, 2017 by Arianwen Morris Leave a Comment

Christmas is a time for tradition, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be your tradition. While a Christmas spent at home is always a treat, a Christmas in Europe is interesting, exciting and delicious. If you love to jump into the action and learn more about other countries, why not fill out your ehic application form and visit Europe? There are lots of reasons why you should experience a European Christmas at least once in your life.

THE TRADITIONS

Around the world there are a lot of strange and fascinating traditions, but in Europe around Christmas time you can find some of the strangest and amazing traditions you never knew existed. In the Alps, villagers dress like demons and run around playing pranks. In Norway, during the limbo between Christmas and New Year, Norwegians dress up and go around door to door singing songs and collecting treats. Each country has its own Santa Claus-like figure and each Christmas icon gives presents and gifts in all sorts of strange ways. To miss these crazy traditions would be a big mistake.

THE FOOD

Around Europe you’ll find both delicious and strange food all over the place and especially at Christmas. This is a time of year heavily influenced by history, and each country has its own traditional foods. Depending on where you stay for your Christmas feast you might have sausage, pork, octopus, salad or boiled fish. There’s also a wide variety of sweet treats, like biscuits, rice pudding and pancakes.

THE PEOPLE

Christmas is a time when most of us tend to be in a great mood and that goes for people in Europe too. If you visit Europe near Christmas time you’ll find the atmosphere to be very different from the summer. That’s because it’s the season of kindness and happiness and you’ll find that making friends during this time of year is incredibly easy and fun.

THE SCENERY

If you thought Europe looked beautiful in summer just wait until you see it in winter. The towns and villages look magical at night when they’re covered in lights. Snow is always romantic, but it’s even more romantic and beautiful when it’s seen in the small, rural villages of Europe. Lakes freeze over and mountains collect fresh blankets of snow, making the countryside look like a glistening winter wonderland. Even in the warmer countries you will see people wrapping up and lighting up the streets to keep away the winter darkness.

THE MARKETS

Everyone loves a good Christmas market, and some of the world’s best are in Europe. Explore the winding streets of remote villages and towns, sampling foods, warm drinks and liquors, and marvel at the lights and cheery music. The Christmas markets in Europe are huge and bring together all sorts of different cultures for you to learn about. Whether or not you actually intend to buy anything, these markets are a lot of fun and will really get you excited for Christmas.
