When most people start planning their holidays to the Caribbean, they imagine long days spent lounging by the sea and plenty of refreshing cocktails. However, there is a lot more to this region than just tanning and swimming. Here are 10 amazing things to do and see while visiting the Caribbean.

1. Take a Surfing Lesson in Barbados

Travellers who have always wanted to stand up on a surfboard will have their chance thanks to a number of companies offering surfing lessons in Barbados. Individual classes can be expensive, but a group course is a smart way to pay less. The Soup Bowl on the eastern coast of the island is the most popular place to hang ten or just watch the talented surfers at sea.

2. Spot Turtles in Nevis

From July to November, turtles come onto the sandy beaches of Nevis and bury their eggs until they are ready to hatch. Visitors who want to experience this amazing phenomenon on their own can hike down to Pinney’s Beach late at night or early in the morning, which is the best time to spot the turtles onshore.

3. Practice Yoga in Turks and Caicos

The warm weather and beautiful scenery of the Caribbean makes it the perfect location to practice yoga, and places like Club Med Turkoise, Parrot Cay and the Regent Grand all offer short courses or longer retreats for interested guests.

4. See a Volcano in Montserrat

For a great party in Antigua, head to Falmouth, which was the original British settlement on the island. Last Leeming has great live music throughout the week, Sun RA offers a tasty rum punch and Shirley Heights is where the locals gather for a party on Sunday evenings.

9. Go Shopping in St. Barths

Those who want to scoop up some gifts or souvenirs while in the Caribbean will have plenty of chances in St. Barths. The port town of Gustavia is home to upscale designers like Chanel and Cartier, but shoppers can also find trendy French fashions and traditional Caribbean scarves in shops like Calypso, Metis and Lolita Jaca.

10. Learn to Sail in the British Virgin Islands

Road Town, in Tortola, is where travellers will want to visit in order to try sailing in the British Virgin Islands. It is possible to learn the ropes with a private lesson and then captain a ship for a day or even a week out at sea.
