Surfing is a thrilling sport that has many health benefits. It’s great for increasing endurance and flexibility; paddling after waves is a fantastic workout for your core muscles, triceps, biceps and deltoids; and standing up on the board improves your balance and strengthens your hips, joints and lower body muscles. If you’re keen to plan a surfing trip overseas, here are some world-class destinations.
BANZAI PIPELINE, OAHU
The Banzai Pipeline in Oahu is home to the Pipeline Masters Surf Contest and it’s considered to have some of the best surfing in the world. If you don’t know how to surf, this is not the place to start, but it is a great place to be inspired. There’s a shallow reef that can be very dangerous, but despite the risks, it offers world-class surfing to those with advanced skills. White Plains Beach is a great place to go if you’re a beginner surfer and require lessons and rentals.
Mallorca is a great place for surfing and other water sports. If you’re going with a group, you can rent a villa near the beach, so it’s easy for people to hit the waves whenever they like. The beaches of Paguera and Cala Major are great areas for surfing and there are lessons available. Kite surfing and wind surfing are also really popular at Alcudia. There are many areas on the island where you can rent equipment for surfing, kite surfing, wind surfing and other water sports. Mallorca also has some great scuba diving sites.
SOUTH CAPE BAY, TASMANIA
Tasmania is a commonwealth state of Australia and a great place for surfing. One of the best destinations for surfers is South Cape Bay on the west coast of the island. The walking trail to the beach is beautiful and a great way to focus your mind and prepare yourself for a great day on the water.
Surfing in India has steadily been gaining popularity for the past ten years and there are now several surf schools open on the Arabian Coast. Goa, in particular, is making a name for itself. Some of the best spots are the beaches of Arambol, Aswem and Agonda. May through September is the best time to go. During these months, you can often find 10 foot waves. While on holiday in Goa, you’ll find plenty of other brilliant things to see, including historic, religious and architectural sites, as well as waterfalls and spectacular rock formations.
Nicaragua lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and is known for its stunning lakes, beaches and volcanoes. The ideal time for those less experienced at surfing is between December and April, while expert surfers can hit the water from May to November. Some of the best places are Playa Maderas, Popoyo, Playa Colorado, Panga Drops, Lance’s Left and The Boom. Playa Maderas has many surf schools and you can rent both surf and bodyboards. Large trucks will transport you and your boards there from San Juan del Sur. Watch out for the sharp rocks at low tide.
LONG BEACH, CAPE TOWN
Long Beach has consistently good swells. Try to go surfing during the week because it can get very busy on the weekends. The waves are pretty easy to ride, but they’re fast moving so you need to stay focused on your surroundings.
